What's the relationship between visibility and reflectance?

I'm having a problem with the atmospheric correction of remote sensing images.

Until now I believed that increasing the visibility (or decreasing AOD) resulted in an increase in reflectance but now if I increase the visibility in areas with high reflectances happens that this reflectance decrease.

I don't understand it. What is the physical explanation?
