I´m working on a project where I have to draw historical shipping routes of trade, whaling, etc. ships from the XIX century.
I´ve done some research and checked some questions in this forum but I want to be sure that I am going in the right direction because I have to learn these tools from scratch:
Finally, anything you can recommend to me will be totally useful since I am REALLY new at this. If there´s a much easier way (taking into account that I'm not able to pay for software) I´ll be really grateful.

I´ve done some research and checked some questions in this forum but I want to be sure that I am going in the right direction because I have to learn these tools from scratch:
- To manage spatial data: apparently Postgis & PostgreSQL are the way to go
- To draw the routes: I have mainly the origin and the destination point and sometimes intermediate harbours. I need a way to approximately draw from data as currents, winds, coastline and landmasses a route of how the vessels got from one place to other. For these goal, is Pgrouting the most useful and simple way? This question> Create a route by using points (pgRouting) unanswered makes me think maybe is not.
- I´ve done a short but useful introduction course of QGIS, this is the way I want to visualize my doings.
Finally, anything you can recommend to me will be totally useful since I am REALLY new at this. If there´s a much easier way (taking into account that I'm not able to pay for software) I´ll be really grateful.
