Web based Huff model for retail store

I am currently going through a MSc in GIS and need to come up with a dissertation topic. I have an idea which is to create a web based app for retail store location planners.

My web based app will require users to:

  • Import store networks (Say 100 points), with an attraction factor (store size, or just plain old Z value)
  • Import sales (at the required geography level)
All other information will be preloaded by myself, such as base geography, competitors, etc.

Once all the data is together I will need to formulate a Huff model to create a probability, which can then be applied to the sales. Therefore, I will need to be able to calculate distances between points, and do various other mathematic functions.

I need know if doing these types of calculations on a web app are possible, and if so what software/servers would be needed? I don't really need to know the how.

I don't really have any experience in online mapping; I am just spit-balling here, trying to come up with some dissertation ideas.

Cheers!
