Tree counting using LiDAR data

Is any body have any idea on Tree counting using lidar point data? I have a small set of data which i want to try it for tree counting. Is there any software or methodology which can give a better result in tree counting of an area. Averagely I have 12 pts/m2 only first return in my data set.
