I work for a small City (under 10,000) that currently has an Arc Enterprise license. I am considering the possibility of steering away from Arc in the future (3-5 year time frame) - possibly to be replaced with QGIS but I do not have a strong understanding of what this might involve. I am wondering if anyone has had experience in transitioning from the sde to sql database structure and then jumping to a non-esri product? What was involved in this? Was data lost or compromised? I know versioning is one function that will be lost from sde to sql, are there other key functions that will be lost or compromised? As you can probably tell from my question's wording, I do not have a strong IT or database background. However, I am trying to inform myself so that I can hopefully recommend the best way for the City to move forward that will meet user needs but not be unnecessarily complicated or expensive.
