Time Series By State

I have an excel file that has the number of customers that visited each day of 2014 by their home state. I'd like to show an animation showing the running % of each state over time (by month or by week of the year). I'm a bit stumped here and would like to break this up into a few questions:

1. How do I join many records (one for each day) to each state?
2. What is the best way to import dates from excel into something ArcGIS can read?

I think I can figure the rest out from there.
