How do I move/rename folders containing MXD's and Shapefiles without having to remap

I am new at ArcGIS although I do know a lot of basic stuff. Anyway I recently started on a new project at my work and the previous person working on the project left all the files and folders in a mess. I want to reorganize/move/rename folders on the computer that contain the MXD's and shapefiles for those MXD's for the project without having to re-map everything. Every time I try to rename a folder and then open up the MXD the shapefiles are missing or rather the path to that shapefile has changed because I have changed the folder name. Is there any possible way to rename the folders and have the path's automatically change or have Arc recognize that just the folder name has changed without having to manually go into each map and shapefile?
