I'm an intermediate GIS analyst with a vision that I need help executing.
I have a team that is constantly distributing back and forth shapefiles of polygons (between 10 and 50 features in each) that represent tree planting sites around a county. Quite often, these sites are changing statuses according to their contracts, and each contract currently has its own shapefile and associated MS Excel spreadsheet that tags along with it showing the status of each feature. To make things worse, some sites are eliminated and added without any warning, so you can imagine how inefficient this is.
I'm interested in creating a database containing all of the sites that's directly connected to the feature geometry, but maintains a user-friendly way to A)digitize new sites and have them imported into this queryable database and B)have a spreadsheet-like front end for editing some of the property attributes. If one of these small sites happens to turn from red to green (meaning cleared for construction), I'm envisioning a drop-down of some sort but one that would affect the feature class in real-time. About 2 people would be involved with digitizing the polys and 6-8 people with no GIS experience would need to edit the statuses.
So my question is, how many different platforms would this potentially require and what are my options? I'm aware of SDO geometry, etc but need to know what would be involved with making this collaborative.
