I have a background in computer programming but very new to GIS. I am thinking of developing a web application where a user selects an area of interest from Google maps and information (coordinates) from this is then used to query an arcGis geo database, Features from a specific layer with these coordinates are then extracted and saved in a local database (SQL server). The data on local database is analyzed for a suitable area for placement of an object on the selected area. An image of the map of the selected area including an 'X' marking the suitable area is then displayed for the user.
Am I over-complicating? Is it doable? I am particularly interested in methods of querying data from arcGis and saving in local database. I can comfortably handle the user interface/google extraction part, It's the GIS side I am not very conversant with.
Thanks
