Cannot connect MSSQL server from QGIS

I'm trying to connect to an MS SQL 2012 database from QGIS 2.8 on Windows and get this error:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "xxx"requested by the login. The login failed. [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager]Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed QODBC3: Unable to connectThe credentials I'm using are valid as I can log in with other clients.

What's causing this issues and how can I fix it?
