I've been trying to identify ridges and valleys from a DEM and have been using hydrology tools. I identify rivers as areas that have a value on an accumulation raster above a threshold, then valleys are the surrounding areas. I have a system that works on a small area, but when I've tried to re-use it for a large area with a big canyon at one end it works fine in some areas, but in the canyon the accumulation figures are so high for every pixel that I cannot discern small ridges and valleys within the canyon. Since I'm not evaluating a basin and am actually trying to identify topographic features what I think would work better would be to run the accumulation tool not on the whole raster, but for each cell run it for the neighbouring 1000 cells. This would be like running the focal statistics tool, but instead of calculating the focal mean, it would calculate the focal accumulation.
Is this possible? and how can I do it?
