The Map of Agriculture is developing products that will make extensive use of such information, and we would like users to be able to easily navigate from top-level (Land, Water, …), through to second level (Soil, Terrain, Cover…), and then to third level (Soil Type, Soil Chemistry, …) categorisations. We are using open source solutions (PostGIS, Geoserver, OpenLayers), and in an ideal world would like to be able to link to the taxonomies automatically. We have looked at AGROVOC, a multilingual agricultural thesaurus provided by the FAO, but it does not appear to organise its data in taxonomies and is focused on production rather than GIS and agro-ecological data.
