I am looking for some basic concepts about DEM elevation data. Can vector contour polylines be used to create hill shading? Or, do I need specific Digital Elevation Data (DEM)? Can DEM data be either vector or raster?
I have a map with contour lines. I also have DEM data in a .gdb file with .atx, .freelist, .gdbindexes, .gdbtable, .gdbtablx and .spx files in it.I would like to apply shading to make the map appear to show hills and valleys, etc.Can I get hill shading from the contour line layer or the .gdb files? Or, do I need to get raster data for hill shading?I can use QGIS or OSGeo4W64.
