Are there any libraries or APIs for automated spatial metadata analysis?

I'm currently researching my options in automated spatial data preprocessing. I am looking for open source libraries or free web APIs which allow me to analyse spatial data regarding:

• it's dimensions (points, lines, etc.)
• and it's attributes (e.g. quantitive vs. qualitative values, etc.)

I've been searching quite a while now and all solutions either require manual input regarding the metadata ("This is a polygon geometry.", or "Column 3 represents the UTM coordinates.") or are very limited on input formats (e.g. shapefiles only), but I am wondering: did I miss anything?

Are there any libraries which allow any geodata inputs and offers me some information output about the formats, dimensions or attributes?
