After execute arcgis script, what happen with the variables?

After the execution of a Arcgis script (I wrote the script in python language) on a Arcmap session.What happen with the variables that I used in the script?They remain stored somewhere in ArcMap (So I can re-use the variables without define them again?).They automatically get deleted.Do I have to delete them manually in the end of the script? What command is usefull for that?
