Job Descrption:
the duties of a land surveyor include making a record of the “distances, directions and angles between two points,” on the ground, using agreed-upon reference points, called benchmarks, as a starting point. While they may use a surveyor’s transit for some work, they also use the global positioning technology to ascertain a specific location. They carefully delineate the boundaries of interest, using both their on-site surveys and records found in land offices, to write the legal description of a parcel. They may use a geographic information system device to prepare a highly detailed, layered map of the results of a survey, to show all easements, soil conditions and structures on a parcel. Surveys filed and recorded in public repositories, such as county or parish clerks’ offices, are public records documents.
