I'm working on a map for a forthcoming book about Afghanistan. Author envisions this as a general reference map. I'm trying to show several things at once:
That's a lot to do in black and white, and I'm wondering if anyone has ideas for a better way to delineate the ethnic areas. I generalized these—perhaps a bit too precisely—from a larger scale map. In part I chose the dots to indicate the imprecise nature of these boundaries, and in part so they wouldn't obscure other linework too much.

- a couple of provinces
- the "ring road"
- areas where one ethnic group dominates
