Trying to come up with a set of symbols for a set of 2 greyscale maps showing the battles the Dutch Republic fought in the 16th-17th century: map 1 for the 80-year war (freeing ourselves of Spanish opression) and map 2 for the first three Anglo-Dutch wars. The challenge here is that the client wants to show a number of things:
- Whether or not the Dutch Republic won that battle
- The year of the battle (and potentially the name as well)
- The weather conditions during the battle, which can be a combination of up to three variables (e.g. a cold rainy storm).
I haven't actually put it all out on a map yet so I don't know how complex it'll be, but as most of the battles will be in a relatively small geographical area it'll be tricky. Map 1 will have 32 battles, map 2 "only" 20. In addition to that, we don't have weather data for a large number of the battles so I'm wondering whether or not a table will be a better way to show that information, de-cluttering the map.
