February 24th marks the 100 episode of #GISTribe!
March 2 is the new GIS Appreciation Day!
March 9 is the two year anniversary of #GISTribe!

For those three special days, we are holding a map contest for each one.

February 24th - 15-Minute Map Contest

Using data from http://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/ create a world, national, or regional map in 15 minutes. You may add one more layer from any source you please, but your basemap must be created from Natural Earth sources. Your fifteen minutes begins once you have all your layers loaded in the GIS program of your choosing. Set your timer (or use https://www.google.com/search?q=15+minute+timer) and put your cartographic skills to the test.
When times up, export, save a screenshot, or copy the URL and submit it to http://gistri.be/submit by Friday February 26. Provide your name and/or Twitter handle and describe your map and the tools used in the text box. Entries will be posted to the #GISTribe blog by the moderator (expect some delay). Will be judged by our volunteer panel of judges. Prizes to be announced.

March 2nd - GIS Appreciation Contest

In this contest, you create a NEW map using the oldest GIS software you have on hand or download QGIS 1.04 which was put out January 2010 - whichever is older. Download page here or direct download link here (29mb). Use shapefiles only. Submit screenshot or exported image to http://gistri.be/submit by Friday March 4th.*Provide your name and/or Twitter handle and describe your map and the tools used in the text box. Entries will be posted to the #GISTribe blog by the moderator (expect some delay). Will be judged by our volunteer panel of judges. Prizes to be announced.

March 9th - Hand-Drawn Map Contest

Just because we make maps, doesn’t necessarily mean we can draw maps like our cartographic predecessors. But what’s to stop us from trying? This is a pen or pencil to paper contest; no drawing tablets for this one. This map could be based on fact or fiction. Some examples might be: draw a map from your house to work, your house to the nearest grocery store, a map from your cubicle to your boss’ corner office on the third floor, a map from Luke’s crashed X-Wing to Yoda’s cave, a map of The Land of Dragonshire. Hachure maps are a good choice for those lacking artistic prowess. Whatever it is, have fun with it!
You may not feel like you’re up to this, but just think: this will probably be the easiest map contest to win as certainly only a few will enter, right? Scan and send it to http://gistri.be/submit by WEDNESDAY MARCH 9 before #GISTribe begins!*Provide your name and/or Twitter handle and describe your map and the tools used in the text box. Entries will be posted to the #GISTribe blog by the moderator (expect some delay).*Will be judged by our volunteer panel of judges. Prizes to be announced.
