I decided to try my hand at giving the locator map of Fort Hall in the United States a facelift, since it was included on the FixWikiMaps project.
I used Tom Patterson's beautiful manual shaded relief for the background. The state and territory borders from 1850 (one of the busiest years on the emigrant trails) are from the National Historic Geographic Information System.
I'm not sure about the choice of places I included on the map: San Francisco, Fort Vancouver and Independence are of vastly different sizes. Should I use different symbols and labels to differentiate the importance of the places? Or should I leave out places other than Fort Hall altogether?
Would an inset map showing the whole of the United States be helpful?
I'm grateful for any hints and suggestions for improving the map.
