Fixing glitches in DEM (QGIS and Photoshop?)

Hello,

I wonder if I could ask for some advice as a complete beginner?

I'm new to QGIS ... my goal is to make nice looking contour maps from around the world. I'm good with Photoshop and Illustrator, and just want to get clean exports out with vector contours and matched DEMs for hillshading, without using pro GIS tools.

The DEM I have is JAXA'z ALOS DEM ... and the area of interest I have started with is in the Andes.

In places on the DEM there are obvious glitchy black spots (and also some less obvious white spot oddities) ... which don't respond to QGIS's 'fill nodata' raster action.

So I thought to use Photoshop's healing tool, which does a great job of fixing this sort of thing.

I even copied TFW files from the original TIFFs so that, reimporting the edited TIFFs to QGIS, the tiles lined up on the projection.

BUT, having round tripped through Photoshop the tiles would no longer merge correctly in QGIS ... there seems to be some more info in a GEOTIFF other than TWF data that Photoshop throws out.

...

Is there a free way to edit GEOTIFF in Photoshop CC?

Or is there a dummy's guide somewhere to fixing this kind of tiny local glitches in DEMs in QGIS?

...

I attach a screenshot showing the little glitches that fill nodata didn't touch.

Regards,

Peter
