Creating and Integrating Data for Natural Resource Applications
Course Introduction
GIS projects for natural resource applications are as varied as the places they are designed to study and protect. You might want to trace pollution in a stream, plan a wildlife reserve, or detect a relationship between environmental factors and human health trends, for example. Whatever the case may be, you need to study information about a geographic location to gain a better understanding of that area's environment. The key to the success of such projects depends upon having the necessary spatial data. Often, the data needed for a project (such as vegetation, species locations, or watersheds) does not exist. If the data does exist, it may require significant manipulation before it can be displayed and used for analysis in a GIS. In this course, you will walk through the data acquisition, creation, integration, and preliminary analysis stages of a GIS project, all within the context of natural resource applications. As you progress through each stage, you will encounter and address various issues that are common to natural resource GIS projects.
