I've been using Illustrator CS5 since I started making maps and am quite happy with it. I am thinking about upgrading my Mac to El Capitan (am running Yosemite now) but I have heard that CS5 programs will no longer work properly, if they will work at all. Has anyone experienced this problem? I have no desire to switch to Adobe's subscription system. The amount of mapmaking I do would not make it economically feasible for me to spend $50/month on software. So, I have decided to see if there are any alternatives to Illustrator that work well for cartography. I am aware of two programs, Inkscape and Affinity Designer. I know that Inkscape is free, open-source software and that Designer costs a very reasonable $50, so I am willing to try both programs. Does anyone have any experience with these programs? Do they have features similar to Illustrator that are useful for cartography (text on a path, graphic styles for cased lines, symbol libraries, robust layering abilities, to name a few)? Is the learning curve very steep? Are there other vector drawing programs out there that I am missing?
