3D mapping on the web - an example

I have been experimenting with using a plugin for QGIS called qgis2theejs. It exports GIS data to 3D interactive information for the web browser (works with most modern web browsers). Lots of cool examples out there. The nice part about this technology is that 3D can be shown in browsers without having to install any plugins or software.

While 3D modeling and stuff has been around for a while, having "maps" or "models" intended for the public to get information is different than 3D that the expert might use to get information.

I admit, this first example is 3D for the sake of 3D... does it communicate any more information than something in 2D? maybe. But I still tried to think about it from a cartography perspective. I like to think of it as a kind of digital version of those raised relief topo maps. We used a very generalized DEM, and the lowest resampling setting on the export.

The other example has more 3D application. It is a goundwater surface, contours, and wells shown under a DEM.
