What's the best open-source workflow / tools for automated mapping of social networks

Working in Windows 8, QGIS 2.8.3, beginning user.

Where I work, we occasionally do social network analysis of communities / individuals. My client is interested in plotting these networks on a map. The data for the network is stored in excel sheets.

I could manually load the points for each person and create lines between them with the attributes of the relationship, but I’m sure there's a more efficient way to go about this. The problem is, I’m in uncharted territory and I have no idea where to start. I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with mapping social networks, and what methods / tools work well for you.

Ideally, I’d like to automatically create lines or arcs between points on the map based on the relationship data. The end result would look something like this:

but on a much smaller scale, using a base map that I’ve already prepared in QGIS 2.8.3. The above map was created using Sonoma and Generic Mapping Tools.

I’m not familiar with either Sonoma or GMT, but from what I can tell, this method wouldn’t allow me to use my own shape files / styles and would result in a static image, whereas I’d like to preserve the ability to query the data.

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated, particularly using open-source software. If your workflow includes the command line or programming I will need extra detail, since I have very little experience outside of GUI.
