I use a mac, but am thinking of converting over to linux and I have friends with PC's who would like to view- so cross platform compatibility is important.
I am NOT any sort of power user of GIS- I literally have no clue and I have been spending hours trying to figure out how to get QGIS started- despite spending hours looking at "QGIS 101" videos on Youtube. I am very frustrated as this is a GIS terminology is a foreign language to me and apparently "I don't get it".
I have been using google earth for years to overlay images of old maps on to GE. I guess my data file is so large that I have had several GE crashes which have deleted literally 100's of hours worth of work. I am done with GE. I need to find something simple to use for literally overlaying images to topos and satellite images- not geospatial analysis (whatever that is).
Is there a simple, yet powerful free open source (or very inexpensive) program I can use that is as simple to use as GE, but where I won't experience gut-wrenching, emotional depression when all my data just arbitrarily disappears after spending hundreds of hours compiling it?
On a side note, is there anywhere, where a person can be "coached" on how to set up a program like QGIS? My needs are simple, but for some reason, I just don't get it, despite reading and viewing tons of stuff. I am stuck on how to download topo maps and how to get started. It would be nice to find someone to just get me set up with what I need to get started, if QGIS is my answer.
