What is the best R package to read and plot .mif files

I realize that this might not have a very straightforward answer. But there seems to exist many options and since I'm starting with plotting geo data with R, I thought I could do with some experienced advice. What I need isn't too elaborate by any means, so I could probably do with a "lighter" package(s).

However, I am looking for performance and for functions that can safely be used programatically, not only interactively.

Here is a gist of the workflow:

  1. Import .mif files - With line features and attributes;
  2. Plot lines colored based on attribute values - discreet and continuous variables;
  3. Overlay line data on Google maps - So need control over projection;
  4. Carry out spatial joins.
I know that to use Google maps I need the package RgoogleMaps. (or OpenStreetMap to use these as background instead.).

Any insights are greatly appreciated.Many thanks
