What are some suggested workflows for producing histograms from raster data?

I have several dozen rasters that I need to produce histograms for - and the histogram capabilities in ArcMap are not up to the task. One possible solution/workflow, seems to output the raster as an ASCII file, and read it into R to create a histogram.

Does anyone have any other/better suggestions?
