What are key methods for interactivity between web mapping and associated websites

I need to know what the key methods are for linking a slippy web map to the website on which it resides. (This isn't a simple question about displaying a map - it's about the more subtle interactivity between map and hosting website/page).

The majority of sites displaying maps treat the map as relatively separate from the remainder of the site. Markers or content may appear on the map, but when the user interacts with them the content or result is confined to a display on the map itself, or at best a window associated with the map.

I'm looking for pointers on linking mapping and the surrounding page(s) more closely.

I'm not a web-designer, but in talking to our web-designer they particularly want to be able to have the content on the map interact with the content on the wider page or site (a simple example would be that clicking a marker on the map changes the page content to relate to this marker).

I'm not necessarily expecting a full technical answer - the question is really about web-design not GIS - BUT I AM hoping for some pointers to get the web-designer started. The web-designer has little knowledge of GIS or web mapping - I have little knowledge of web-design.

My initial guesses are that Leaflet javascript might be where I need them to start - but my experience is limited to self-contained web mapping.

Working examples of websites which do this would be helpful. Examples compatible with Drupal would be a bonus.
