I used the “Create Layers From Selected Features” a lot as working with sunsets of a database is typically more efficient in ArcGIS (v. 10.3). Recently I had a project when I was trying to determine “hot spots” based upon a feature class consisting of approximately 50K polygon features. Basically I used the “Join data from another layer based on spatial location “to obtain a frequency count of where the reference polygon features overlaid themselves. So I ended up with a feature class which contained the COUNT_ of the number of polygons which overlaid a particular cell. But then I wanted to use only a subset so I selected the records of interest and then created a layer from the selection and reran the join data dialog. But the function used all the polygons not just the ones I had selected which through me for a loop. So my question is why does the “Join data from another layer based on spatial location “ use the whole feature class as opposed to only the selected layer (sub-selection)? My fix was simply to create a subset feature class and then run the Join Data which worked fine, but I would have thought the Layer from selection which have worked too but apparently not.
