Transferring coded domain alias names to Trimble data dictionary for GPS updates

I am using a Trimble GeoXH unit along with TerraSync and Pathfinder Office to update the positions of assets in our water district that have never been GPS'd (they were brought in from CAD drawings, but not field verified). Our GIS is an ESRI Enterprise ArcGIS database running on a SQL Server (ArcGIS 10.3).

The points feature class that contains the assets I am attempting to GPS has fields with coded domains (category, subtype, etc.). I have selected a subset of points to be updated, exported them as a shapefile using ArcGIS Desktop/Catalog, and used the "import" utility in PFO to create a separate Data Dictionary from the shapefile. I then edit the DDF to change the automatically created text fields to menu fields so that the coded domain alias will be visible in Terrasync, being sure to preserve the verbatim field names so that they will be matched.

However, when I import the shapefile and attach the edited DDF, the matches are successful but I get the message that this is an illegal field type conversion and that my attributes will be set to null.

I need to see these attributes in the field to distinguish between points for selecting and updating the correct features. What am I missing?
