tilted meridians; straight labels?

As I've mentioned before, I do relatively little small-scale mapping, so the longtime conventions aren't always second nature to me.



Here I'm mapping early US custom houses (1832), so I only need the eastern part of the country. Normally, I'd rotate the view so a central meridian (such as the Ohio-Pennsylvania boundary) would be vertical—but in this case I'd have to reduce the entire map because of having dots along the diagonal from eastern Maine to New Orleans.



Does it look funny to have only the eastern third of a conic projection like this, with the state and placenames kept horizontal?
