I have thousands of locations that I would like to snap to be placed on top of a hundreds of polylines based upon matching attribute fields. Think of them exit signs located on every interstate-highway in the United States. There will be thousands of locations for the signs and significantly less roads. The issue is that I need to maintain a minimum distance (1 mile for example) between each location after they are snapped to their corresponding line. Each point location that I have has a County and State attribute as well so I would like the snap function/tool to be able to prioritize these attributes so that points are not allowed to leave their County (there is a County shapefile as the baselayer). I have access to both Arc and QGIS.
This is a small scale example of the locations that I would like to be snapped to the lines. The black lines are U.S. county lines. I have over 50,000 points that need to be snapped so a tool or function that could help would be appreciated.
