QGis - Shapes and polygons disappear or are wrongly drawn

I'm trying to learn GIS using QGIS through the courses offered in GeoAcademy fossgeo.org/free-qgis-courses/

I'm in the first course. One exercise in the course is about editing existing geospatial data. Basically, you add lines to an existing .shp:

All seemed sweet and nice until I saved the layer edits made to the 'netcurr' layer. Then the lines I created disappeared from the screen. At first I though I had forgot to save and tried drawing the lines again, and I noticed that the cursor was snapping to the nodes of the (invisible) line I drew previously. Then I viewed the attributes table for the layer and the attributes for my line were there. I deleted these attributes and tried drawing the line again, this time the cursor was no more snapping to the invisible line. After I finished drawing, I saved the layer edits and the new line, again, disappeared. Then I restarted QGIS and my PC.

Weird enough, somehow when I closed qgis, the netcurr.dbf file was renamed (I have not been able to reto netcurr_"something_I_dont_exactly_remember".dbf) independently from the rest of the netcurr files. I don't know why it was renamed, but when I opened my project again, the lines I drew appeared in the screen, but the attribute table was empty (logically, since the .dbf file now had a different name than the rest of the set).

So far I've tried to match the layer CRS to the Project CRS. Even when the project CRS is set to OTF, when netcurr.shp is imported as layer it keeps its own CRS. After I manually match both CRS, the symptoms stay.

Does anyone have an idea what's happening and why?

These are the files provided for the lab (53mb):dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/245847/CAM5Data.zip

These are the netcurr.shp set I am using (3.3 mb):dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/245847/Lab%205%20Data.zip

I'm using QGIS 2.12. Laptop is Intel Core i7 with 16gb RAM, graph card is 4gb AMD FirePro

I also made a video showing what I'm facing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOazG_pRX2g
