Problem with running Union Tool - Error Code 000229

I have been working through an ESRI Tutorial for GIS Analysis. One of the tasks is to Union two feature classes (Flood Areas and Land Use) which are both polygon feature classes.

Each time I attempt to run the Union (Analysis) tool, I get the following error:

000229 Cannot open source layer

I have tried several troubleshooting solutions including:

1. Changing file paths of the geodatabase containing the feature classes.
2. Changing the name and file paths of the geodatabase and feature classes to not include spaces.
3. Export the feature classes into shape files.
4. Copied the entire geodatabase containing the feature classes onto my hard drive.

None of these have worked. I contacted ESRI support and I am waiting on a call, but it is frustrating that I cannot complete this tutorial because of a simple geoprocessing tool.
