After a couple years out of the GIS field I just started a new job in conservation. I requisitioned a Dell Precision T1700 with HDD (not SSD), Xeon CPU, nVidia Quadro K420, 8GB RAM. I thought it would run ArcMap great, but apparently that is not the case! I'm running 10.3.1. It slows to a crawl when editing, whether the feature class is complex or simple. Often the cursor switches to the hourglass and it just hangs indefinitely. If I click around, eventually it will place points.
I've tried everything I can think of, turning video acceleration on and off, putting my files and cache on a USB 3.0 thumbdrive (closest I can get to trying an SSD). Have tried both working out of a geodatabase and shapefiles. Tried setting affinity to single CPU cores.
I've googled to see if others have issues with 10.3.1 but it doesn't seem to have known performance issues vs older versions.
Should I just try downgrading to 10.2.2? Or is there some other release that is known to perform well?
