Number of Datasets vs Connection Time with ArcSDE - Solutions? [on hold]

This is a question that seeks to understand how much data people from the GIS community load into ArcSDE and whether they had problems with connection time and if they have found any soloutions. If you can answer the following 3 mini questions that would be great.

  1. How many datasets do you have loaded into your ArcSDE database?
  2. How long does it take to connect your database (from ArcCatalog)?
  3. Have you managed to speed up the connection time, if so how did you do this?
Just so you know - we have roughy 2000 datasets loaded in Oracle and PostGreSQL databases with ArcSDE - both databases have the same exact data, yet Oracle takes 5 seconds to load, and PostGreSQL takes 40 seconds.
