What region is Mongolia in?
To give some context: I (rather, we) are making a geopolitical-simulation game, in which we aim to put different countries in the (somewhat) correct regions. What we are aiming for is purely regional, not focusing on the political, but rather the geographical location of said country. In the process of doing this, we ran into a problem. As different atlas'es, and litterature on the topic, disagree in which region Mongolia is located.
Of course, this is purely for entertainment purposes, and thus doesn't take politics into account, as that is what the players actions do.
So purely geographical, does Mongolia belong to Eastern, Western or Central Asia?
BONUS: Could someone explain why there is a dispute in which region Mongolia is located? Is it historical, political or geographical?
