How to set up an offline maps viewer application on linux? [on hold]

I'm having an 8-years old notebook (pentium 4 3Ghz 1Gb Ram) with Debian (installed recently), I just want to be able to navigate through the map around 1-2 cities, with ability to seek adresses and lay bike, car and public transport courses offline, preferably using openstreetmaps. I have already managed to install marble and download some rastered maps, but I can nither to seek adresses nor to lay courses offline. I don't even see house numbers offline. Maybe there are some instructions how to acomplish that?

I have also tried to install other software - Gosmore and Navit but didn't manage to make work either of them (I couldn't see a map), so I gave up with this soft and came up with Marble.

Any ideas appreciated.

Updated:

By the way, it seems that marble can not make public transport routes and monav can't seek for house numbers. And I didn't succeed to use an adress search online function in marble as well - I have no idea where to get and how to install such data (preinstalled only about 12000 cities as I read). I'm totally confused.
