How to measure nearest neighbor in miles or kilometers between two point layers using

I have tried to look for an answer to this question, but cannot find an adequate solution. I have two point layers. One is of locations by lat/longs of homes in Louisiana. The other is a layer of points that map the coast of Louisiana. Basically, I want to calculate the distance to the coast of each of the homes in miles or kilometers. The layer of homes consists of over 13,000 points and the layer of points that maps the coast has about 3,500. I have tried using a few tools but haven't been able to get it right. First, I tried using NNjoin and it worked, but gave the distance in degrees. The same happened with the Distance Matrix tool. I tried to reproject the layers, but when I did it they layers became really small. The scale was 1:10 versus 1:2,000,000 viewing the entire state. When I used NNjoin or the Distance Matrix tool it calculated the distance in meters, but because the layers were so small the results given didn't make any sense. Also, I have tried using MMQGIS hub lines tool, but that maps each point in one layer to the other, which would result in millions of lines. I don't have much experience in QGIS.
