I recently, just picked up GIS and am currently learning it to work on a project that will involve locating a vehicle on a road based on its Geo-position and its bearing.
I've discussed with a few colleagues about how roads are mapped (and information stored in a relational data structure for GPS maps online such as Google Maps/TomTom Maps etc). We've discussed that they are probably storing it in terms of nodes that are related to one another by their intersections of different roads that they are connected to or something.

- What's the data structure like for roads on the maps? (how they're stored and located)
- What is there a standard on how road information(metadata) are stored & requested ?
