How can I simplify linear features?

I have a shapefile with OSM data (road networks) for an entire state. When viewing the entire state, or even down to the county level, the display performance is painfully slow. How can I simplify the roads features (remove vertices, removes bends, remove points)?

My preference is to perform this via python script so I can automate the process but I'm willing to do this via the GUI.
