Grass 7 import shapefile problems

I'm just messing about with Grass 7 (installed fine on Ubuntu 14.04 - well no errors at least). I'm trying to import a shapefile using v.in.ogr and when presented with the dialog box, browse for my shapefile. In the List of Vector layers window there are no layers shown, so I've nothing to select and when I click import, it throws an error 'no layers selected. operation cancelled'.

Clearly missing something simple here - any ideas?

p.s. The same thing happens for kml and geojson files - though have managed to import raster images successfully
