GML Poly's in MySQL

With apologies if this is a stupid question. I have large .GML files with polygons of regions around the country, some are a single polygon, some are multiPolygon. My question is what is the best way to store this in MySQL? I was assuming that I would create a single GEOMETRY column and then insert either POLY or MULTIPOLY in there? That leads to my next question, how best to translate a gml multiSurface with interior and exterior polygons into a MySQL MULTIPOLYGON.
