Format : pdf
Pages : 610
Edition: December 2011

This handbook covers all aspects of geomorphological mapping. It provides a practical set of tools and examples for use by academics and practitioners. The volume is purposefully interdisciplinary and seeks to provide linkages between different subject areas that use geomorphological mapping in analysing and solving practical problems. The volume should be of interest to civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, geologists, geomorphologists, archaeologists, soil scientists, land managers, planners, environmental scientists and landscape ecologists.
Organised around three primary sections, the first section details the history of geomorphological mapping, focusing upon the development of methods and their evolution within different national “schools”. Further chapters outline the aims and objectives of geomorphological mapping, going on to evaluate the makers and users. The section concludes with a review of quantitative risk assessment through the incorporation of geomorphological mapping. Section 2 reviews the techniques for geomorphological mapping, introducing traditional field techniques and then moving on to the use of digital data for digital mapping and managing error. Cartographic symbolization and automated techniques conclude this section. Section 3 presents case studies for different industrial/applications of geomorphological maps and from a variety of morphoclimatic settings demonstrating the wide range and application of geomorphological maps in both academic and professional arenas. The book concludes with a section looking at future developments.
