Meet Andrew White – one of Esri Australia’s Consultants and a specialist in ArcGIS for Desktop and Server. We spent five minutes with Andrew to find out what inspires him to help clients reach their full GIS potential.
EA: Tell us about your role as a Consultant for Professional Services at Esri Australia – what are you responsible for?
AW: In my support role, I assist clients with any ArcGIS Desktop and Server queries they may have. As a trainer, I teach the ArcGIS foundation courses, including: Introduction to GIS, Essential Workflows and Performing Analysis.
EA: What do you love most about your job?
AW: The diversity of my role, working in a team, and the opportunity to share my GIS knowledge with others – whether it be through teaching a course or providing technical support to clients.
EA: How did you end up at Esri? What’s your career background?
AW: After graduating from the University of Queensland I pursued my passion for GIS by working in a variety of hands-on roles. These included: GIS officer for the Queensland Department of Emergency Services, seismic surveyor across remote locations around Australia, and GIS field officer with the Gold Coast City Council.* I then made the move to Adelaide and joined the Esri Australia family.
EA: What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned since being in this role?
AW: How easy it is today to*extend the reach of ArcGIS*into the field by using your smartphone or tablet to collect and update information. This can also be done whether your*connected or disconnected from the internet and without having to purchase very expensive hardware.
EA: Why do you enjoy conducting training sessions?
AW: After teaching a course, I love knowing students are leaving with a new wealth of GIS knowledge that I have been able to pass on. It’s very rewarding to see students take-away the same GIS passion as myself, and apply this knowledge in their own workplace to implement best practice solutions.
EA: What’s your advice to clients considering undertaking some training?
AW: I would highly recommend visiting the Esri Australia training website to familiarise yourself with the different courses on offer. Depending on your interests, there are*a variety of GIS training paths*you can take.
EA: What Esri training course would you like to undertake – and why?
AW: Introduction to ArcGIS Pro for GIS Professionals – it’s new and exciting, and I would love to jump on board and learn a new application within the ArcGIS Desktop family.
EA: Outside of work – what’s your idea of fun?
AW: Catching up with friends, family and travelling. Whether it’s a short break locally or exploring overseas, living in Adelaide, there are many options right on our doorstep, you don’t have to go far to get away.
EA: What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
AW: I am a keen traveller. I have trekked the wilderness to see the mountain gorillas in Uganda, travelled across Tibet to see Mount Everest, and climbed an active volcano in Chile.
EA: At Esri Australia – we’re all about geography! So where’s your favourite destination in the world?
AW: Heron Island – we have an absolutely stunning gem of an island right on our doorstep, located on the southern edge of the Great Barrier Reef.
