Evaluate path and line segments by slope

I am looking for simple solutions to evaluate the slopes of trails and paths in the form of polylines, or line features. I tried an ESRI tool I found online but I got an error message when running it stating it couldnt read my raster amongst other things.

There are 2 functions I need to perform, one is to be able to draw a trail segment by segment while knowing the slope of each segment. I do this by drawing line features and connecting contour lines while routing around obstacles on the ground. I need to know the slope of each line segment I draw, while Im drawing it. For instance, I cant draw an entire trail then run an analysis only to find out I exceeded maximum slope in a certain area. The analysis needs to happen in real time, from segment to segment.

Two: I need to be able to evaluate existing polylines or line features for slopes, based on segment. For instance, highlite segments of the trail that exceed certain slopes. I dont need to display either in 3D, although it would be cool, but rather a 2d planar surface. I feel like Im so close to figuring it out but missing some key procedure here.

Further, I am also looking for adjustability in these lines, as I would like to add and edit vertices to shape the line features, and correct poor slopes by re-routing the trail. My outputs ultimately need to be line features that can represent trails on a map. It would also be nice to be able to label the segments by slope.

Are these tasks feasible in ArcGIS? I have 3D analyst, Spatial analyst v10.2.Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
