difference between pixel size, images resolution and ground sampling distance?

I am facing difficulty in understanding the difference between image resolution and pixel size.

Does the size of pixel determines if an image is of coarse resolution or the image resolution i.e the number of columns * number of rows of a pixel?

I have come across a synthetic image where the pixel size was 43.5 and the dimension of the image were 60 * 60. later the image was degraded using a scale factor of value 2. So the degraded image dimensions became pixel size= 43.5/2 =21.8 and the dimension of the image became 30 * 30. now am unable to understand how can be degraded if the pixel size is reduced which means much better resolution compared to the original 43.5 resolution image.
