Counting chickens on a scale w/ top down view

I am extremely new to QGIS, and just GIS in general. I'm working on a scale project where our end goal is to weight chickens using a hanging scale, then count the number of birds present on the scale during the time of measurement. I've uploaded a picture of what the camera sees as an example. What is my best way to go about "counting" chickens on a scale with an image like the one below?
