contour from TIN or Contour from IDW

I would like to know the difference between contour lines derived from IDW and contour lines derived from TIN. I have collected GPS points, and I know the elevations are not accurate but it is within in range of my application and acceptable. What are the underlying statitical methods that differ between these two methods (Derive points either to IDW or TIN and then to Contour lines)?
